چکیده

Most empirical work in spoken word recognition has focused on monosyllabic words, and most theories and models are limited to monosyllables either in scope or in practice (in that the theories' predictions for polysyllabic words have largely been unexplored). We add to the small number of studies to date explicitly comparing recognition of monoand polysyllabic words with a study examining time course predictions that follow logically or by simulation from three theoretical perspectives. We tracked subjects’ eyes as they followed spoken instructions to click on pictures in a display (i.e., we used the visual world paradigm). Consistent with a computational model, we found a late-emerging advantage for long words over short words matched on several lexical dimensions, though the effect was weaker than expected. The results suggest new constraints on theories of spoken word recognition.

Comparative Effect of Visual and Auditory Teaching Techniques on Retention of Word Stress patterns: A Case Study of English as a Foreign Language Curriculum in Iran

This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual (Cuisenaire Rods) and auditory nonsensical monosyllables using Pratt speech processing software as teaching techniques on retention of word stress. To this end, 60 high school participants made the two experimental groups of the study each having 30 students on the basis of their proficiency scores on KET (Key English Test). In one experime...

An embedded word training procedure for connected digit recognition

The "conventional" way of obtaining word reference patterns for connected word recognition systems is to use isolatàd word patterns, and to rely on the dynamics of the matching algorithm to account for the differences in connected speech. Connected word recognition, based on such an approach, tends to become unreliable (high error rates) when the talking rate becomes grossly incommensurate with...

There goes the neighborhood: Lipreading and the structure of the mental lexicon

A central question in spoken word recognition research is whether words are recognized relationally, in the context of other words in the mental lexicon [1, 2]. The current research evaluated metrics for measuring the influence of the mental lexicon on visually perceived (lipread) spoken word recognition. Lexical competition (the extent to which perceptually similar words influence recognition ...

Auditory word recognition of verbs: Effects of verb argument structure on referent identification

Word recognition includes the activation of a range of syntactic and semantic knowledge that is relevant to language interpretation and reference. Here we explored whether or not the number of arguments a verb takes impinges negatively on verb processing time. In this study, three experiments compared the dynamics of spoken word recognition for verbs with different preferred argument structure....
